After 2020’s canceled conference, and 2021’s virtual conference, we will be back in-person in 2022.  We will be Back in the Saddle Again!  Really!  No horsing around!  We’ll saddle up in Aiken, South Carolina, on September 23-24, 2022. 

Most folks likely know that Aiken is horse country.  All presentations will be held at the University of South Carolina Aiken’s campus.  Home of the Pacers!  Information is forthcoming on a place to hit the hay.  Aiken is a great place to eat and drink.  If you’re hungry as a horse, downtown Aiken is a great place to be.  More info forthcoming on hotel and social possibilities during the conference.  

Call for Proposals:

You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.  You can also create a conference theme, but no one pays any attention.  Conference themes are actually pretty silly, dog and pony shows.  We all know such themes are promoted and then submitters tweak a title here and there to make their work appear to “fit” the conference theme.  But hold your horses.  This theme might be a horse of a different color.

We are “back” to an in-person conference after two years.  There are a lot of opportunities for academic work with a “back in or to” theme after the horrible pandemic.  There’s lots of room for reflection on how the pandemic has impacted every facet of our lives as symbol-using, symbol-making, and symbol-misusing animals.  In our academic context, the pandemic obviously impacted teaching and learning as we went from in-person classes, to online (or hybrid/blended), to in-person, to online, and then back again.  Additionally, it’s hard to consider contemporary political rhetoric without thinking about the pandemic.  We see health advocacy campaigns imploring folks to get their shots and mask up.  And thus we have the big vaccine and mask debates, protests, and the like.  Heck, a mask is nonverbal communication. 

Of course, submissions don’t have to deal with the pandemic.  Anything equine would be just fine.  Loads of possibilities regarding history, so-called “heritage,” and equestrian statuary, monuments and the like.  Furthermore, submissions obviously don’t have to deal with horses.  The “back in” could be a larger metaphor for really any sort of back and forth movement, emotionally, logically, theoretically, etc.  And, it goes without saying that submissions don’t necessarily have to fit the theme at all.  Again, themes are sort of silly, and there to frame the convention, but also to reign in anything totally out to pasture.

So giddy up!

If you want to quit horsing around and pony up your great work, this next bit of information is straight from the horse’s mouth:

  • Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit their research papers.
  • Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit research posters.
  • Faculty are invited to submit research papers.
  • Faculty are invited to submit research or teaching panels.
  • Faculty are invited to submit Great Ideas for Teaching Students, which we call GIFTS.

All Paper submissions (undergraduate, graduate, and faculty) must include two Microsoft Word file attachments: (1) a file containing a cover sheet listing the paper title and author name(s), affiliation, email, physical addresses and phone number for all authors, and (2) an anonymized file including a 50-word abstract and the completed paper not to exceed 25 double-spaced pages excluding references and appendices.  Please use CCA Paper submission in subject line.

Undergraduate and graduate Poster submissions must include two Microsoft Word file attachments: (1) a file containing a cover sheet listing the paper title and author name(s), affiliation, email, physical addresses and phone number for all authors, and (2) a file including a 50-word abstract and a rationalization of the use of a poster.  If accepted, poster presenters must use best practices in designing the poster:  Important information should be readable from about 10 feet away; title is short and draws interest; word count of about 300 to 800 words; text is clear and to the point; use of bullets, numbering, and headlines make it easy to read, effective use of graphics, color and fonts; consistent and clean layout; includes acknowledgments, your name and institutional affiliation.  Please use CCA Poster submission in subject line.

Faculty research or teaching Panel proposals must include one attachment containing the following: (1) a one-page rationale for the proposed panel, (2) a brief (50-word) description for the conference program, and (3) a list of all participants including names, affiliations and contact information (e-mail, physical address and phone number).  Please use CCA Panel proposal in subject line.

GIFTS submissions are teaching ideas for any/all courses – Interpersonal, Organizational, Small Group, Media, Gender, etc. – not just Public Speaking. All ideas must be original to the presenter, does not duplicate any other previously published work, including your own previously published work, and has been implemented in the classroom. All GIFTS submissions will be considered for new Top GIFTS recognition. GIFTS submissions are structured into individual sections as follows:

(1) Title; (2) Course/Program: The applicable course(s) for which the GIFTS was conducted;

(3) Abstract: 100 words; (4) Rationale: A brief explanation of the reason for the activity, research question, hypothesis, etc.; (5) Directions/Method: A description of the process, procedures, etc.; (6) Results/Debrief: A discussion of the results, findings, benefits, etc.; (7) Appendix (if applicable): FYI handouts, lists, examples, etc.; (8) References (if applicable).

Common practices of professional ethics tell us that, if submitting traditional papers, authors should expect anonymous review and should not submit the same paper that has been submitted and presented at other academic conferences and/or published and/or accepted for publication.  Additionally, professional ethics tells us that if you submit work and that work is accepted for presentation, you have agreed to register for the conference, and attend in-person to present your work. 

Awards are available for the top faculty, top undergraduate and top graduate papers. New this year will be an award for the top GIFTS paper. This isn’t CCA’s first rodeo and we believe in showcasing good work and meaningful ideas that might not always find a home at other conferences.

Even if you don’t stable up in the Carolinas, we welcome communication research from near and far; so hoof it to South Carolina.  Our conference is often the first conference for undergraduate or graduate students. Our conference is also one that seasoned faculty often find themselves returning to (or attending for the first time) to learn about ongoing work in the discipline, to reconnect with colleagues, former students and old friends, and to meet new ones as well.
